CAN I JOIN LIFT AT THE FULL MEMBER LEVEL?
Everyone must join as an Associate member (which costs $60) and works their way up to the Full Level ($120) by completing required volunteer hours and paying for the increase in the membership rate.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT BEFORE I CAN START RENTING EQUIPMENT?
Everyone joins LIFT as an accessing associate member. In order to begin renting equipment and facilities, applicants will have to pay the fee, complete the membership application, provide 3 references, and provide photo identification (such as a valid Canadian drivers license or passports). It takes about 1-2 weeks before you can start renting.
I WORK DURING THE WEEK, HOW CAN I COMPLETE MY VOLUNTEER HOURS?
It may take you a little longer to get those hours racked up, but there's lots of stuff happening around LIFT, and we'll usually be able to find stuff for you to do; postering, special events, workshops, committee work...all of these are things which require evening and/or weekend help. Alternatively you can buy out your volunteer hours at $10 per hour.
WHAT DOES HELPING OUT AT THE OFFICE ENTAIL?
Anything from data entry, scanning, cleaning editing suites, sweeping, mopping, stuffing envelopes, running errands, handywork (like painting or fixing things), and anything else which might come up over the course of the day. Some technical tasks may be available, but only for qualified individuals.
IF I VOLUNTEER ON SET FOR A MEMBERS' SHOOT, CAN THAT BE COUNTED TOWARDS MY LIFT MEMBERSHIP HOURS?
No, the volunteer hours are meant to help LIFT with its operations, activities and services, not to help directly on members' shoots. You are, of course, welcome to seek volunteer positions on members' films on your own time, but that do not relate to the membership upgrade requirements.
HOW CAN ACTORS BENEFITS FROM LIFT?
LIFT has a Cast Listing for members and non-members to look at if they are casting a film. For members inclusion on the Cast Listing is included in your membership. For non-members the Listing is $25 a year, and non-members would also receive our e-bulletin which lists casting calls. LIFT members and other filmmakers do check the Listings as it is open and can be accessed without a password.
HOW CAN LIFT HELP ME MEET OTHER FILMMAKERS?
The answer to this question largely depends on why you want to meet other filmmakers. If you're hoping to "network" ie. meet other independent filmmakers solely for the purpose of furthering your filmmaking career, LIFT has no program (ie. mentorships) for that specific purpose. However, many LIFT members do make acquaintances with each another, which eventually blossom into working relationships, either by volunteering at LIFT or through attendance at LIFT workshops, our Screenwriters' Circle, LIFT OUT LOUD, screenings and events. As well the e-bulletin posts various events that would be worthwhile to attend in order to build your professional network.
HOW CAN LIFT HELP ME GET WORK ON SET?
LIFT has the following resources to help individuals find work (paid or volunteer) on shoots:
You can subscribe to be on LIFT's Cast/Crew Listing, and post a headshot/resume online. This service is free for LIFT members and $25 per year for non-members. Members and non-members alike are welcome to take a look at the Listings, which is divided into sections according to (female and male) talent and crew positions.
Members can post the notices (for talent, crew, film promo) in our e-bulletin free of charge, while non-members can post a notice in the e-bulletin for $10 per posting. Non-members interested in posting in the e-bulletin please contact the office for more information at 416.588.6444.
NOTE: None of the above methods guarantees that you will be called to participate on a shoot. The best we can do is let filmmakers know who is out there and interested in working. In the overall scheme of things, however, there are as many ways to get work on a film shoot as there are individuals looking to get work.
