York University's THE INDEPENDENTS series is pleased to present an evening with AVI LEWIS, introduced by Canadian film scholar SETH FELDMAN. Lewis will screen his critically acclaimed feature documentary THE TAKE (2003), produced with renowned author Naomi Klein. The Independents is presented by the Department of Film & Video, the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies, and the Faculty of Fine Arts, York University.

In the wake of Argentina’s spectacular economic collapse in 2001, Latin America’s most prosperous middle class finds itself in a ghost town of abandoned factories and mass unemployment. In suburban Buenos Aires, thirty unemployed auto-parts workers walk into their idle factory, roll out sleeping mats and refuse to leave. All they want is to re-start the silent machines. But this simple act - the take - has the power to turn the globalization debate on its head.

Director/producer Avi Lewis and writer/producer Naomi Klein take viewers inside the lives of ordinary visionaries, as they reclaim their work, their dignity and their democracy. THE TAKE is a stirring and timely idealistic documentary that raises questions about globalization, government and human nature.

“An eye-opening, possibility-widening documentary! If Michael Moore could calm down just a little and maintain a watchful distance, THE TAKE suggests the kind of film he’d make.” - Gene Seymour, New York Newsday

“Builds tension like a quality thriller... a remarkable film that demonstrates that in the fight against corporate globalization, resistance isn't futile.” - Rob Nelson, Mother Jones

Winner, Grand Jury Prize for Best International Documentary at the American Film Institute Festival.

Avi Lewis is a director and producer who was host/producer of CounterSpin on CBC Newsworld. Prior to The Take, he directed and edited the short GUSTAVO BENEDETTO: PRESENTE! Naomi Klein is an award-winning journalist and author of the international bestseller NO LOGO: TAKING AIM AT THE BRAND BULLIES. Her articles have appeared in publications such as The Guardian, The New York Times, The Nation and Le Monde Diplomatique.
